Fire Roasted Salsa for Camp

When the summer winds move on, and the leaves flare up then fade and fall;  Some of us start to act a little (more than usual) crazy around the cabin... Tis' the season of seasons. Time to drag out the totes full of gear, and the gun cleaning begins. Time to get our heads into the hunt and out of "fall sports season " that our kids have used to consume the last three months of our time. When planning for our weekend treks to the back woods; it behooves us to do things which make camp life go more smoothly. One of those staple needs ( at least in this writer's opinion ) is a good salsa to take the chill off around the camp, when heaped onto the endless supply of chips ( which are another story, but none the less; another seasonal staple ). A good salsa goes on most any dish. A good salsa compliments most any sandwich. A good salsa activates a lot of extra pheromones that help our frequent naps go very well.... ( and for some, it has been known to go nicely with beer or whiskey ) and can be stored for most of the season with little effort ( at camp )... Soooooooooo.... without further flourish ( spelled nostalgia by some, bull$#!& by others ) I give you; Fire Roasted Camp Salsa

Ingredients:

4#- Vine ripened beefsteak tomatoes
2#- Vadalia onions
2#- Red Bell Peppers
1 cup fresh scallion
1 cup
1/2 cup brown sugar

PRODUCT REVIEW: Bates GX-8 GTX tactical boots

Ready to kick it up a notch? Then try this breathable, waterproof and durable boot on for size. The Bates GX-8 allows for maximum water repellency with a GORE-TEX lining. It’s guaranteed to keep you dry with its powerful combination of waterproofing and exceptional breathability. Worn by tactical professionals across the country, its aggressive design features cement construction, a similar structure found in athletic shoes, which allows for a lightweight and highly flexible fit.
Features
  • 8" soft-toe boots
  • Side-zip entry with YKK zipper
  • Ballistic nylon upper
  • Durable waterproof and breathable GORE-TEX lining
  • Removable cushioned insert for customizable comfort
  • Slip-resistant rubber outsole
  • Athletic cement construction for lightweight flexible feel
  • That's, all the official stuff straight from Bates. What I can tell you guys is that I purchased these out of pure necessity. While deployed this fall as a CERT team member, I took a brand new pair of these out of the box, ran them very hard and carelessly treated them for over 500 continuous hours of chasing convicts through the worst environment the Adirondack wilderness has to offer. No time to be cleaned up, or dried out. No time to be treated with any products or preservatives. Simply brutalized these boots and prayed they would last. (My brand new pair of issued jump boots having lasted for roughly the first 86-96 hours through rivers, mud, swamps, and logging slag). I can honestly say I was not inclined to believe these lightweights would be a better boot than the full leather and reinforced ones we already demolished. Simply stated, they not only lasted for the duration, but came out of it in excellent condition. I would no doubt recommend these to any serious operators in law enforcement, or military applications...

COMING SOON: LE Gear On The Job

Ok people, don't be shocked, it's a second post on the same day. I wanted to apologize to my readers and those of my partner sites, for being away for so long. in the days to come I'll be putting together a series of posts geared toward some useful tips and equipment reviews of products that "went through the ringer" during the month long deployment I was on searching for inmates who escaped from my home jail, Clinton CF up north in New York. Those of us on the Emergency Response Team or CERT for short, experienced some pretty harsh conditions for several weeks, and our equipment was certainly put to the test. Much of our standard issue was cast aside in favor of products we found to work better, and that tolerated the conditions we encountered. Because its so difficult to get new equipment in many departments, and cost is a major factor most of the time, I've decided to give up the information I've collected , right here for free. It's the right thing to do, and hopefully it will help get others fitted with the tools they need to get the job done... stay tuned...

TEST and REVIEW: MaGnet Gun Caddy

Good afternoon everybody. Had the chance to try out a new product today for a partner site www.nanasdeals.blogspot.com. So here is the BBaB's of the Magnet Gun Caddy. It is actually a relatively small and easy to store accessory. The device employs a solid magnet encased in plastic, which is joined to a pair of high density foam "fingers" which expand to wrap around a gun barrel then close back up, causing a gripping action on most barrels. The usefulness of this device becomes readily apparent when you use it to lean a rifle or other long gun up against a car or truck. I often find myself shuffling around at matches looking for a place to put an uncased weapon while unloading other accessories needed from the vehicle. This little whiz, solved my problem immediately. Another occasion which became a great example is that I now have a place at the local trap range for my shotgun in between rounds, other than laying my fairly expensive Over and Under in the bed of my truck or across the front seat. I quickly discovered that I have alternative uses as well, finding it to be a great device for holding up a push broom in my enclosed trailer. (Yes, the trailer is for hauling guns when its not being used for catering or recreation, we conserve spending by finding alternative uses for everything). You can check out more information on this and other products at www.MagnetGunCaddy.com.

Yes I highly recommend this handy accessory.

Lovin' Whitetails ...

The trail cams are shedding some light on the potential for early season success ... I was out there last week and got to spend a few days ... no better deer hunting that I've ever seen, ANYWHERE.

This is four young, very promising bucks, and one mature bruiser who's probably seen his best head gear...

REVIEW: Aspen Ridge Single point Tactical Sling

We received the product during the spring turkey season, and decided to try it out on the turkey hunt. One of the viable points of these products is their ability to provide support while shooting. As such I found the Aspen Ridge to be as good as any of the other in kind products I've had the opportunity to use. Having said that, I'll point out that the price point on this product makes it a very viable choice for those seeking a sling which allows connection to a weapon with an attachment point. Having taken the time to produce myself a couple different types of mounting points for a variety of my weapons, I also highly recommend hunters and outdoorsmen taking a crack at the use of this product. The sling allows for a comfortable way to carry your firearms in a forward set up, and offers rapid deployment in hunting situations, Guides and hunters taking trips to hunt in my favorite place, Alaska; this set up is indispensable in carrying your rifles ready to react in bear country where the danger remains high year round. I have attached the link for Aspen ridge, and their contact information. Having found the product to be everything I've come to expect, I give it 5 of 5 stars...http://www.aspenridgesports.com/sofsling-2/

An excellent You Tube video by my friend Jerry, who is undoubtedly the fastest shooter of all time... I suspect that readers will make the observation that these techniques are lending credibility to the fundamentals we spoke of in an earlier post.

Veto Pro Pac CT-XL Product Review

Hello all. Just finished up a few days with my new toy, the Veto tote bag or to be more accurate, the Veto Pro Pac CT-XL. I found it to be an exceptionally useful companion with multiple uses aside from its intended service which is carrying tools. The large size and solid base made for some pretty unique opportunities to consolidate trips to the SUV and from there to other final destinations.
As a range bag, I found it exceptionally capable of toting large quantities of ammunition and equipment in an organized fashion, with its helpful side pockets that hold useful smaller items such as writing implements, score sheets, target pasties, and ear plugs. The heavy rings on either end were perfect for attaching a shoulder sling, clipping on head sets, and my Otter Boxes. The leather wrapped carry straps were quite comfortable, even heavily loaded with ammo and such.
As a boat bag, it similarly excelled, holding my wet weather gear, extra reels, and tackle sliders with ease. Its solid base again proving its worth by not allowing water into the bag from the wet deck. With its multiple rings and anchor points, it was easy to secure and again carried the entire load comfortably from house, to SUV, to boat and back again
I even checked the thing out for carrying utensil tubes for the catering business, where again it gets a full five stars for usefulness, purpose, and durability. I found it very easy to clean due to its material make-up, and the solid base shines again by preventing sauces, juices, oils, and such from running off utensils and out of the bag. All contaminants were contained and washed out easily when arriving at the appropriate location.
I then left it sitting for a few days before doing the review, concerned that I was lavishing too much praise on the product. But even after going over it in my head a few times I was unable to find anything about it I'd change, or criticize. So this tote gets a 5 of 5 star rating from this writer, and I highly recommend it for anything you may need a tote bag for... all the contact information and specs are available on the link below, for all those AR folks out there that just have to see the numbers: http://www.vetopropac.com/

Chamberlain's Leather Milk, Leather Care Liniment No. 1 - Review

This week I tried out a new product we received for cleaning and treating leather. The product is called Chamberlain's Leather Milk Leather Care Liniment No.1 Yup, that's a whole lot of name for one bottle. Soooo, we broke out some leather... a Bianchi Holster, a Budd's rifle sling, my new (and recently stained left boot by Vasque, a rifle bolt shroud and rear bunny ear bag from Protekktor, a Gould&Goodrich holster and a leftover swatch of premium leather from a knife sheath. All Items were cleaned per the instructions on the bottle. All items were left to sit and dry then lightly buffed. From the photo's it is mostly clear that everything came clean as predicted by the manufacturer.A couple of things I'll go ahead and point out before someone says "WHOA WHOA WHOA, RIGHT THERE MISTER" "The product manufacturer said NOT to use it on light or very soft leather/suede as it might darken the aforementioned material" "Yet you've gone and gooped it onto your $200 leather shooting rest and again on your bolt shroud and leather swatch"... Invariable someone would then ask "what'd ya go en do that fer???" Well its like this people, I never really liked that shooting bag because it was so light colored, after every match I'd shoot, it showed dirty spots and rub wear... So I figured this was as good a chance as I was gonna get to darken it up a little without losing my textured surface. Guess what ??? It cleaned all the residue off the bag beautifully, and darkened it just enough for a seasoned look. I'd further like to point out, that it did not in fact change the color of the raw leather swatch, or if it did, I can't see it. I must say that the treatment did an exceptional job on my duty holster, as well as my Bianchi holster and the left boot. The gun sling which was starting to dry out from years outdoors, was much more supple and returned nicely to its original condition. No staining or discoloration was observed on any of the test mules, except of course the Protekktor Shooting Bag. I found the odor of the product to be non-offensive (and downright tasty smelling by 3 pm when I hadn't eaten all day), and the residue on my hands washed up easily with soap and water. In comparing this to the many leather products I've used for various applications in the past, I'd give it a 5 of 5 for a STAR rating. I would definitely recommend it for its intended application and I fully agree with it's use on all of the materials tested here, and more. Hopefully we will be able to give you a rundown on the rest of the Chamberlain line in the near future. Aspen Ridge Sports Vertical Tactical Foregrip

Disclosure: I received this product as part of an advertorial.
We recently received a tactical forend grip from Aspen Ridge Sports. The grip came appropriately packaged for retail sale. The product test mules were a Smith & Wesson M&P 1522, and a Remington 700P R4. The rails on both rifles readily accepted the grip, and using the enclosed wrench, were simple to tighten. Ergonomically the grip itself is comfortable and allows for quick and repetitive hand placement. The adjustments were easily accomplished by the press of a button, and folding the grip away when not in use was done in the same manner.

The unit appears, and proved to be, quite durable, and the weight does not hinder the balance of the test weapons. Through several hundred rounds of firing the unit has not loosened under recoil, and can handle at least as much leverage as the test rifles can... all in all we believe this to be an excellent product with a rating of 5 stars.

Only Foregrip Backed By A 5 Year No-Hassle Free Replacement Guarantee only offered by Aspen Ridge Sports store
